Background of the study

Student support services are vital in ensuring that students have a positive and successful academic experience. These services encompass a wide range of functions, including academic advising, counseling, career guidance, and administrative support. However, in many universities, these services are often under-resourced and face challenges in meeting the growing demands of students. AI-powered chatbots present a viable solution to enhance student support services by providing 24/7 access to information, answering frequently asked questions, assisting with administrative tasks, and offering academic and career advice. In Taraba State University, Jalingo, an AI-powered chatbot could automate and streamline student support processes, making them more efficient and accessible. This study will focus on the design and implementation of an AI-powered chatbot for student support services and evaluate its impact on the efficiency and effectiveness of these services.

Statement of the problem

At Taraba State University, Jalingo, the student support services face several challenges, including limited staffing, high student-to-staff ratios, and the increasing need for prompt assistance. These challenges can lead to delays in service delivery, which negatively impacts the student experience. AI-powered chatbots offer a promising solution to alleviate these challenges by providing quick, accurate, and consistent responses to student inquiries. However, the effectiveness of AI chatbots in addressing diverse student needs, particularly in Nigerian universities, remains uncertain. This study aims to explore the potential of AI-powered chatbots to enhance student support services at Taraba State University.

Objectives of the study

1. To design and implement an AI-powered chatbot for student support services at Taraba State University, Jalingo.

2. To evaluate the effectiveness of the AI chatbot in improving the accessibility and efficiency of student support services.

3. To assess students' satisfaction with the AI-powered chatbot compared to traditional support service methods.

Research questions

1. How effective is the AI-powered chatbot in answering students' inquiries and providing timely support?

2. What is the impact of the AI chatbot on the accessibility and efficiency of student support services at Taraba State University?

3. How satisfied are students with the AI-powered chatbot compared to the traditional support service model?

Research hypotheses

1. The AI-powered chatbot will significantly improve the efficiency and accessibility of student support services at Taraba State University.

2. Students will report higher satisfaction with the AI chatbot compared to traditional support services.

3. The AI chatbot will reduce the workload on student support staff, enabling them to focus on more complex tasks.

Significance of the study

This study will provide insights into the potential of AI-powered chatbots to enhance student support services in Nigerian universities. The findings can guide the implementation of similar systems in other institutions, improving the overall student experience and operational efficiency.

Scope and limitations of the study

The study will focus on the design and implementation of an AI-powered chatbot for student support services at Taraba State University, Jalingo. Limitations include the potential for low student engagement with the chatbot and challenges in integrating the system with existing university platforms.
